Statin therapy and association with ovarian cancer risk in the New England Case Control (NEC) study
International Journal of Cancer Nov 04, 2018
Akinwunmi B, et al. - Whether statin use can reduce the risk for epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) was investigated in a large case–control study including 2,040 cases with EOC and 2,100 frequency-matched controls without EOC from the New England Case Control study. Researchers analyzed data collected between 1992 and 2008 from the participants regarding medications used for at least 6 months. Unconditional logistic regression controlling for matching factors and potential confounders was used. Adjusting for the matching factors and other covariates, an overall, a 32% lower risk of ovarian cancer was observed in association with statin use by women vs non-use. With statin therapy, the risk for both serous and non-serous EOC, and especially mucinous EOC, was reduced. These effects were especially pronounced in those taking a lipophilic statin who began use after age 49 and who had used them 2-4.9 years.
