Statin therapy among chronic kidney disease patients presenting with acute coronary syndrome

Atherosclerosis May 09, 2019

Natanzon SS, et al. - Whether statin therapy has a beneficial impact across a wide range of chronic kidney disease patients having acute coronary syndrome (ACS) was investigated in this study. The participants were all 8,845 ACS cases enrolled in the Acute Coronary Syndrome Israel Survey between the years 2006 and 2016. Based on renal function assessed by an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) calculation on admission (MDRD formula), the participants were classified into eGFR<30 ml/min/1.73 m2 (n = 525, 6%), eGFR 30–59 ml/min/1.73 m2 (n = 1919, 21%), and eGFR>60 ml/min/1.73 m2 (n = 6501, 73%). Across the entire studied patient population, the beneficial impact of statins was seen in terms of higher mortality, and thus, statins should be prescribed to these patients irrespective of their eGFR.
