Statin adherence and mortality in patients aged 80 years and older after acute myocardial infarction
Journal of the American Geriatrics Society Oct 24, 2019
Phan DQ, Duan L, Lam B, et al. - In this retrospective population-based cohort study, researchers analyzed statin adherence patterns in older patients (aged 80 years or older), and investigated factors related to high adherence. They also examined the link between statin adherence and all-cause death. This inquiry was performed in an integrated healthcare system in Southern California and included hospitalizations for acute myocardial infarction (MI) in 5,629 patients, 80 years or older. These patients met the inclusion criteria. High adherence to statin therapy was noted in 68.8% and partial adherence and non-adherence in 20.4% and in 10.8%, respectively. High statin adherence was reported in relation to the male gender and white race. Participants were observed for 4.3 ± 2.6 years. Improved survival was observed in relation to high adherence to statins post-MI in older patients, aged 80 years or older. This link may be attributable to other related factors as well, instead of only to adherence to statins.
