Statin adherence and mortality in patients aged 80 years and older after acute myocardial infarction
Journal of the American Geriatrics Society Jun 21, 2019
Phan DQ, et al. - In this retrospective population-based cohort study, researchers analyzed the trend in statin adherence in older patients (aged 80 years or older) and determined factors related to high adherence. They also examined the link between statin adherence and all-cause mortality. Hospitalizations for acute myocardial infarction (MI) in an integrated healthcare system in Southern California between January 1, 2006, and December 31, 2016, were included, and yielded 5,629 eligible patients. High adherence to statin therapy was reported in 68.8% of patients, partial adherence in 20.4%, and no adherence in 10.8%. Factors related to high statin adherence were male sex and white race. Participants were observed for 4.3 ± 2.6 years, and findings revealed improved survival in relation to high adherence to statins post-MI in older patients.
