Stage at diagnosis and survival in patients with cancer and a preexisting mental illness: A meta-analysis
Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health Nov 05, 2019
Davis LE, Bogner E, Coburn NG, et al. - Given that risk for cancer care disparities exist in people with a preexisting mental disorder, particularly in those having reduced social, occupational and functional capacity, researchers determined the influence of mental illness on cancer outcomes via this systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies. These studies were selected from MEDLINE and PubMed. They found overall 2,381 citations. Included studies were 28 in total and meta-analysis included 24 studies. By pooled analyses, a higher odds of advanced stage cancer at diagnosis and risk of worse cancer survival was found in people with a preexisting mental disorder. Greater risk for cancer disparities was evident in people with more severe mental illness, such as schizophrenia. Findings highlighted significant gaps in research examining cancer stage at diagnosis and survival for people with preexisting mental illness.
