Squamous cell carcinoma of the nasal cavity: A descriptive analysis of cases from the head and neck 5000 study

Clinical Otolaryngology Sep 19, 2019

Dale OT, Pring M, Davies A, et al. - In this investigation, researchers presented contemporary epidemiological data on the nasal cavity's squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), which represents a rare type of cancer of the head and neck. Individuals with tumours of the nasopharynx, paranasal sinuses and other sub-sites of the head and neck have been excluded. Included in the study were 30 people with nasal cavity SCC, most of whom were male (67%) and current or ex-smokers (70%). The majority (70%) had early-stage (T1/2, N0) tumours. In people with moderate or severe co-morbidities, worse outcomes of survival were seen. Epidemiological data on nasal cavity SCC in the UK was provided in this investigation. Disease patterns and survival outcomes are described and high-risk groups are identified. Additional studies should investigate whether the primary modality of treatment alters survival.
