Sputum microbiome temporal variability and dysbiosis in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease exacerbations: An analysis of the COPDMAP study
Thorax Jan 07, 2018
Wang Z, et al. - Researchers, herein, focused on characterizing the temporal variability of the microbiome from large longitudinal chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) cohorts in order to gain a better understanding regarding the already suggested possible role of lung microbiome dysbiosis in COPD exacerbations. Findings demonstrated that some exacerbations were characterized by microbial dysbiosis. Importantly, the presence of microbial dysbiosis, especially in concert with eosinophilic inflammation, was found to be associated with more severe exacerbations, which were reflected by the observed greater fall in lung function.
