Spike in diabetic ketoacidosis rates in pediatric type 2 diabetes during the COVID-19 pandemic

Diabetes Care Apr 30, 2021

Chao LC, et al. - Since the impact of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV2) on the incidence of new-onset type 2 diabetes and diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is unknown, researchers desired to know whether the association of DKA observed in adult patients with type 2 diabetes is an issue for youth during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic. A retrospective single-center medical record review of pediatric subjects presenting with new-onset type 2 diabetes between March and August of 2018 to 2020 was performed in a large, urban children's hospital. Youth with new-onset type 2 diabetes had a higher incidence of DKA at presentation in 2020 than previously observed. Future research should look into the effect of SARS-CoV2 exposure on the onset of type 2 diabetes in people of all ages in order to improve patient care.
