Speech-language pathology care and short- and long-term outcomes of oropharyngeal cancer treatment in the elderly
The Laryngoscope Oct 26, 2017
Webster KT, et al. - The goal of this paper was to inspect the correlation between speech-language pathology (SLP) care and pretreatment variables, short-term and long-term swallowing and airway impairment, and survival, among elderly patients treated for oropharyngeal squamous cell cancer (SCCA). The findings unveiled that SLP care was underutilized in elderly oropharyngeal SCCA patients and largely utilized after the onset of impaired airway and swallowing function. It was related to improved outcomes. Hence, a necessity arose for treatment guidelines encompassing the routine use of SLP care in the study cohort during the initial treatment period and beyond.
