Spectrum of symptoms in women diagnosed with endometriosis during adolescence vs adulthood
American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology Dec 21, 2017
DiVasta AD, et al. - This cross-sectional study was carried out to gain an insight into the endometriosis symptom presentation of adolescent vs adult women, in order to ultimately determine whether disparities existed based upon age at surgical diagnosis that could impact time to diagnosis. Findings revealed that pelvic pain was severe, non-cyclical, and negatively influenced quality of life. Between women surgically diagnosed during adolescence vs those diagnosed as adults, no difference was noted, at tertiary care centers, with respect to symptoms of endometriosis. In adolescents, more nausea and symptom onset at menarche were reported. Data showed that multi-year delays in diagnosis were common. Awareness among clinicians regarding these alternate symptom patterns as well as inclusion of endometriosis in their differential diagnosis for both adolescent and young adult women experiencing non-cyclic pelvic pain and nausea was recommended.
