Specific inflammatory profile in each pregnancy complication: A comparative study
American Journal of Reproductive Immunology Dec 16, 2020
Brien M, Boufaied I, Bernard N, et al. - Given that 5%‐12% of pregnancies are affected by preeclampsia (PE), preterm birth (PTB) and intra‐uterine growth restriction (IUGR), researchers here investigated the inflammatory changes occurring in the second part of pregnancy to determine profiles differentiating pathological pregnancies from each other. They randomly selected 200 women from a cohort recruited at the CHU de Quebec‐Universite Laval, Quebec, Canada, for conducting this nested case‐control study. Significant inflammatory changes were identified in uncomplicated pregnancies towards delivery, supporting that normal delivery is pro‐inflammatory, although not to the same extent as in pathological pregnancies. Findings revealed increased levels of IL‐6, CXCL10 and CRP in women with PE vs those with uncomplicated term pregnancy. In PTB, increased CXCL9 in 2nd trimester and decreased progesterone at delivery were observed. They revealed increased HMGB1 and IL‐1α only in the 2nd trimester in IUGR.
