Sources of opioid medication for misuse in older adults: Results from a nationally representative survey
Pain Aug 24, 2018
Schepis TS, et al. - Researchers assessed the sources of misused prescription opioid (PO) in adults aged 50 years and older, looking at 50 to 64 and 65 and older groups separately using 2009 to 2014 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) data. Age-based differences in sources were compared between older adults and younger age groups. Outcomes suggest that, compared to adolescents or younger adults, older adults (particularly those 65 years and older) use a different pattern of PO sources. The highest prevalence of physician source use for misused opioid medication was observed in older adults; 47.7% of misusers 65 years and older, used a physician source for misuse in the past 30 days. Outcomes thus signified the potential role of clinicians in limiting such misuse.
