Biscetti F, et al. - In this cross-sectional study including 154 statin-naïve subjects with type 2 diabetes mellitus, researchers assessed the link between sortilin levels and the presence of clinically significant lower limb peripheral artery disease (PAD). The presence of clinically significant PAD was noted in 74 patients, while 80 were free from PAD. They detected a significantly higher sortilin concentration in subjects with clinically significant PAD vs those with no PAD (1.61 ± 0.54 ng/mL vs 0.67 ± 0.30 ng/mL, P < 0.01). Also, a trend highlighting increased sortilin levels as disease severity increased, was also noted. Overall, a significant as well as independent association of sortilin with the presence of lower limb PAD was observed in a statin-free diabetic population. Sortilin could be a promising marker for clinically significant atherosclerosis of the lower limbs.
