Soluble urokinase receptor and acute kidney injury
New England Journal of Medicine Feb 06, 2020
Hayek SS, Leaf DE, Tahhan AS, et al. - Researchers explored if a high level of Soluble urokinase plasminogen activator receptor (suPAR) predisposed individuals to acute kidney injury in multiple clinical contexts and experimental models were used to distinguish mechanisms by which suPAR acts and to assess it as a therapeutic target. The plasma levels of suPAR preprocedural were assessed in individuals who underwent coronary angiography and patients who underwent cardiac surgery and at the time of admission to the intensive care unit in critically ill individuals. A total of 3,827 individuals were included who were undergoing coronary angiography, 250 who were undergoing cardiac surgery, and 692 who were critically ill to evaluate the suPAR level. The relationship was found between high suPAR levels and acute kidney injury in various clinical and experimental contexts.
