Sodium bicarbonate administration during in-hospital pediatric cardiac arrest: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Resuscitation Mar 09, 2021
Chang CY, Wu PH, Hsiao CT, et al. - Researchers focused on how sodium bicarbonate (SB) can influence mortality as well as neurological outcomes in pediatric patients suffering from in-hospital cardiac arrest. Studies of pediatric patients, with two treatment arms (treated with SB or not treated with SB) during in-hospital cardiac arrest (IHCA), were identified from PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials. They analyzed 7 observational studies comprising 4,877 pediatric in-hospital cardiac arrest patients. As per findings of meta-analysis, a significantly reduced rate of survival to hospital discharge was reported in relation to SB administration during pediatric cardiac resuscitation. Based on the results of this meta-analysis of non-randomized studies, the current Pediatric Life Support guideline that routine use of SB is not advised in pediatric cardiac arrest except in special resuscitation situations, is supported.
