Socioeconomic status and survival outcomes in elderly cancer patients: A national health insurance service-elderly sample cohort study
Cancer Medicine May 11, 2019
Jang BS, et al. - Whether lower socioeconomic status (SES) was related to higher all-cause mortality in patients newly diagnosed with cancer, especially among the elderly, was investigated in patients from the stratified random sample of Korean National Health Insurance Elderly Cohort (2002-2015). In elderly patients, increased risk of overall survival (OS) and cancer-specific survival (CSS) was observed in relation to low SES at the time of cancer diagnosis. By SES, the patterns of OS and CSS varied based on cancer sites. Among patients manifesting colorectal, urinary, liver, gastric, melanoma, and esophageal cancers, worse OS was observed in patients with low SES vs those with intermediate SES. Also, worse CSS was observed in low SES patients with urinary, liver, or colorectal cancers or melanoma vs those with intermediate SES.
