Socioeconomic status and stroke incidence, prevalence, mortality, and worldwide burden: An ecological analysis from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2017
BMC Medicine Nov 04, 2019
Avan A, Digaleh H, Di Napoli M, et al. - Data from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2017 was obtained in order to examine the global and socioeconomic status (SES)-specific stroke incidence, prevalence, burden, and mortality and to assess the significance of age, gender, and modifiable risk factors in stroke mortality. Since nearly half of stroke-related deaths were because of poor management of modifiable risk factors, thus it is possibly preventable. Societal barriers of lower-SES groups should be taken into account to design altered preventive approached. SES was still robustly related to modifiable risk factors and stroke burden, irrespective of betterment in general health knowledge, access to healthcare, and preventative approaches, hence, screening of individuals from low SES at greater stroke risk is important.
