Socioeconomic status and skin cancer incidence: A population‐based, cohort study in the province of Ferrara, northern Italy
Clinical and Experimental Dermatology May 15, 2021
Corazza M, Ferretti S, Scuderi V, et al. - This retrospective cohort comprising patients with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), basal cell carcinoma (BCC) or malignant melanoma (MM) was used to determine how socioeconomic status (SES) could impact the occurrence of skin cancer in the population residing in the province of Ferrara, Italy. An ecological‐based deprivation index was used to ascertain SES. A direct correlation between BCC and SES was revealed by both crude and standardized (on the European population) rates as well as the standardized incidence ratio. These findings were corroborated for BCC and also for MM in multivariate analysis, while the lowest SES subgroup was shown to exhibit an excess of SCC incidence. The results demonstrate, for the first time, opposite impacts of SES on the occurrence of SCC and BCC. It may be hypothesized that there is a role of environmental factors conditioned by SES.
