Socioeconomic status and dementia onset among older Japanese: A six-year prospective cohort study from the Japan Gerontological Evaluation Study

International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry Jul 26, 2019

Takasugi T, et al. - Researchers examined how the socioeconomic status (SES) indicators of education, job, and income are associated with dementia onset in older adults. From the Japan Gerontological Evaluation Study, they included a total of 52,063 community-dwelling adults (aged 65 years or older) without long-term care needs in this six-year prospective cohort study. Dementia developed in 10.5% of participants over the follow-up period. The analysis revealed a strong impact of educational attainment vs other SES factors on dementia onset in both genders of older Japanese people. Attainment of education during childhood seems crucial for preventing dementia later in life. Lower likelihood of longest job held being a risk factor for dementia incidence was seen vs the other two factors.
