So-called “non-classic” ciliated muconodular papillary tumors: A comprehensive comparison of the clinicopathological and molecular features with classic ciliated muconodular papillary tumors
Human Pathology Aug 12, 2018
Zheng Q, et al. - In this largest series of Chinese patients with ciliated muconodular papillary tumors (CMPTs), researchers intended to validate the rationality of “non-classic” CMPTs and investigate the clinicopathological traits of CMPTs by analyzing data from 21 cases of lung nodules with classic CMPTs and so-called “non-classic” CMPTs. Findings revealed that, while missing from their “non-classic” counterparts, cilia and the mucinous and papillary components were often found throughout classic CMPTs. It was noted that non-classic CMPTs share comparable genetics and phenotype with classic CMPTs. They found that the hallmark of CMPTs was bi-layer architecture with frequent driver mutations. In order to avoid misdiagnosis and unnecessary treatment, recognition of the non-classic morphology of CMPTs could be useful.
