Snuffbox arteriovenous fistulas have similar outcomes and patency as wrist arteriovenous fistulas
Journal of Vascular Surgery Mar 08, 2019
Siracuse JJ, et al. - Two types of distal access, radial artery-based wrist arteriovenous fistulas (AVFs) and the anatomic snuffbox AVF, were compared in terms of perioperative and midterm outcomes. Querying the Vascular Quality Initiative database, 4525 distal forearm fistulas [179 (4%) snuffbox AVFs and 4346 (96%) wrist AVFs] were identified. Patients with snuffbox AVFs and wrist AVFs were not significantly different regarding baseline demographics or comorbidities except that patients with snuffbox AVFs had fewer tunneled lines at access creation (70.2% vs 65.2%) and had a lower American Society of Anesthesiologists class. Findings suggest midterm results achieved with snuffbox AVFs were similar to those of wrist AVFs.
