Smoking, disease characteristics and serum cytokine levels in patients with primary Sjögren’s syndrome
Rheumatology International Jul 19, 2018
Olsson P, et al. - Authors examined if markers of disease activity and cytokine expression in primary Sjögren’s syndrome (pSS) patients differ between ever and never smokers. They noted expected differences in cytokine levels compared to controls, but ever and never smoking pSS patients demonstrated no major differences. A local effect of smoking on salivary glands rather than systemic effects by cigarette smoke was noted while considering the negative association between pSS diagnosis and smoking in epidemiological studies.
