Nephrology Dialysis Transplantation Oct 30, 2021
Wakasugi M, Kazama JJ, Nitta K, et al. - In patients receiving hemodialysis, smoking was revealed as a significant risk factor for any fracture necessitating hospitalization.
A total of 154,077 hemodialysis patients [64.2% men; mean age, 68 years; current smokers= 19,004 (12.3%)] were followed for 1 year.
Follow-up revealed occurrence of 3,337 fractures needing hospitalization (1,201 hip, 479 vertebral, and 1,657 other fractures) in 3,291 patients.
In multivariable logistic regression analysis, current smokers had a 1.25-fold higher risk of any fracture requiring hospitalization than non-smokers in a fully adjusted model.
Similar results were observed on propensity score matching (odds ratio, 1.25).
