Smaller inguinal hernias are independent risk factors for developing chronic postoperative inguinal pain (CPIP) : A registry-based multivariable analysis of 57, 999 patients

Annals of Surgery Mar 24, 2020

Hoffmann H, et al. - Researchers examined if and how inguinal hernia defect size as stratified by the European Hernia Society classification I to III influences the rate of chronic postoperative inguinal pain (CPIP). The Herniamed registry yielded data of a total, 57,999 male patients who underwent primary unilateral inguinal hernia repair including a 1-year follow-up between September 1, 2009 and November 30, 2016. Outcomes revealed the independent value of smaller inguinal hernias as patient-related risk factor for developing CPIP. Higher rates of pain at rest, pain on exertion, and pain requiring treatment were inscribed in younger patients (< 55 y) with a significant trend toward higher rates of pain in smaller hernias.
