Small dense low-density lipoprotein cholesterol predicts cardiovascular events in liver transplant recipients
Hepatology Jan 29, 2019
Siddiqui MB, et al. - Given that cardiovascular disease is an important cause of morbidity and mortality after liver transplantation (LT), researchers assessed the impact of small dense low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (sdLDL-C) on cardiovascular disease (CVD) events. The study sample consisted of 130 patients who had detailed lipid profile consisting of traditional lipid parameters and sdLDL-C and were followed for CVD events. They observed that the mean age of the cohort was 58±11 years and the most common etiology of liver disease was nonalcoholic steatohepatitis and hepatitis C. Investigators found that small dense LDL-C predicted independently CVD events while LDL-C did not. This association was independent of diabetes, hypertension, gender, ethnicity, liver disease, obesity and statin use. SdLDL-C can, therefore, provide a useful clinical tool for risk- stratifying and managing patients after LT.
