Small cell carcinoma of the esophagus: A nationwide analysis of treatment and outcome at patient level in locoregional disease
American Journal of Clinical Oncology Jun 03, 2019
Jeene PM, et al. - Using a nationwide multicenter retrospective cohort, researchers examined patients with nonmetastasized small cell carcinoma of the esophagus (SCEC) to determine the influence of treatment factors on outcome. Between January 2000 and December 2014, treatment with radiotherapy was received by all patients as a component of curative treatment. Overall 58 patients were examined. Post-definitive chemoradiotherapy, a frequent recurrence of SCEC at distant sites was reported, with usual occurrence within 1 year post-curative treatment. A low infield recurrence rate was noted with a dose of 45 to 50 Gy. Findings revealed a link between number of received chemotherapy cycles and survival; best outcomes were achieved following at least 4 cycles of chemotherapy.
