Small bowel adenocarcinoma as a complication of celiac disease: Clinical and diagnostic features
BMC Gastroenterology Mar 30, 2019
Caio G, et al. - In a large cohort of celiac patients diagnosed in a single tertiary care center, researchers studied the main clinical characteristics, diagnostic procedures and management options for small bowel adenocarcinoma (SBA), a rare neoplasm. Study participants included 770 CD patients who were diagnosed at the Celiac Disease Referral Center of the St. Orsola-Malpighi University Hospital (Bologna, Italy) from January 1995 to December 2014. At 5 years, the overall survival rate was 80%. Although CD-related SBA cases were presented in a limited series, prominent features were younger onset age, a higher female gender prevalence, and better overall survival vs sporadic, Crohn- and hereditary syndrome-related SBA.
