Sleeve gastrectomy is the most common cause of gastro-esophageal reflux disease in comparison with other bariatric operations
Digestive Diseases Jan 16, 2021
Abu Sneineh M., et al. - A retrospective cohort study was conducted to ascertain the incidence of symptomatic gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) following different types of bariatric surgery and which operations are considered contraindicated for GERD. Between January 2010 and June 2019, 729 patients who had undergone bariatric operations at Shamir (Assaf Harofeh) Medical Center had their medical records examined. The incidence of symptomatic GERD in patients who underwent sleeve gastrectomy (SG) was 39.9%, which was significantly higher vs what was seen after roux en y gastric bypass (16.4%), LAGB, (23.4%), or OAGB (11%). Out of 718 patients, 113 had a positive swallow test, and of these, 71 developed GERD symptoms post-operatively without correlation to the degree of reflux at the swallow test but with statistically significant correlation to the type of operation, particularly for SG. SG should be contraindicated in asymptomatic reflux contrast swallow study and symptomatic GERD patients preoperatively de to high levels of symptomatic GERD post-operatively. Asymptomatic reflux at contrast swallow study pre-operatively should be considered a risk factor for GERD after the operation.
