Sleep duration, vegetable consumption and all-cause mortality among older adults in China: A 6-year prospective study

BMC Geriatrics Jun 25, 2021

Bai C, Guo M, Yao Y, et al. - Researchers examined relationships of sleep duration and frequency of vegetable intake with mortality among 13,441 participants aged 65 years or older. They categorized sleep duration into five groups (≤5, 6, 7–8, 9, and ≥ 10 h/day). Vegetable intake was grouped as either high frequency (eating vegetables almost daily) or low frequency. Findings revealed higher mortality risk in relation to too short and too long sleep durations, and exacerbation of the risk could result from infrequent vegetable intake, although frequent vegetable consumption could offset the risk for short sleep duration. The link between these two lifestyles and mortality was complicated and differed among subpopulations.
