Sleep-disordered breathing is associated with recurrent ischemic stroke
Stroke Feb 15, 2019
Brown DL, et al. - In this large population-based study, researchers analyzed the association between sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) and recurrent stroke and mortality. Patients with ischemic stroke (2010–2015) were identified in the BASIC project (Brain Attack Surveillance in Corpus Christ). Findings suggested an association of SDB with male sex, Mexican American ethnicity, being insured, nonsmoking status, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, lower educational attainment, and higher body mass index. Overall, they concluded that SDB was not associated with mortality, but with recurrent ischemic stroke. Therefore, SDB could represent an important modifiable risk factor for poor stroke results.
