Sleep apnea increases ninety-day complications and cost following primary total joint arthroplasty
Journal of Arthroplasty Mar 01, 2019
Vakharia RM, et al. - From 2005 to 2014, researchers assessed complications in candidates with vs without sleep apnea (SA) experiencing either total knee (TKA) or total hip arthroplasty (THA) in 529,240 patients. They noted greater odds of developing medical complications following TKA or THA among cases with SA. They suggested an enhanced risk of developing postoperative complications in cases with SA after primary total joint arthroplasty (TJA). They also suggested educating the patient regarding adverse effects and also to encourage continuous positive airway pressure use, which may alleviate postoperative complications.
