Skeletal muscle attenuation (sarcopenia) predicts reduced overall survival in patients with advanced epithelial ovarian cancer undergoing primary debulking surgery
Annals of Surgical Oncology Sep 12, 2018
Ataseven B, et al. - Researchers retrospectively assessed preoperative computed tomography scans of consecutive epithelial ovarian cancer patients (n=323) for skeletal muscle index and muscle attenuation (MA; Hounsfield units) to determine how sarcopenia influences overall survival in these patients following primary debulking surgery (PDS). Findings revealed a significant association between low MA and poor survival. The association was especially evident in patients with residual tumor after PDS. They suggest that risk stratification after PDS could be performed using MA assessment.
