Six-month readmissions after bariatric surgery: Results of a nationwide analysis

Surgery Aug 09, 2019

Rios-Diaz AJ, et al. - Using the Nationwide Readmission Database, researchers sought to assess the national burden and causes of readmission after the three most common bariatric procedures (laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding, laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, and laparoscopic gastric bypass) in the United States. Among 228,043 identified patients, 10.1% underwent laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding, 36.1% underwent laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, and 53.9% underwent laparoscopic gastric bypass. They observed an overall 180-day readmission rate of 10.8% (laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding 8.3%, LGS 7.8% and laparoscopic gastric bypass 13.2%). Increased readmission was observed in independent correlation to the following factors: greater preoperative comorbidities; either Medicare status or Medicaid status relative to private insurance; moderate or major severity of illness relative to minor Nationwide Readmission Database-provided severity of illness; nonresident of state where they were admitted initially; discharge to a health care system other than home; admission to private hospital relative to nonprofit hospital; prolonged duration of initial hospital stay; and a serious adverse event occurring during the index admission. An incremental mean difference of $15,781 in total costs was observed for patients who were readmitted.
