Simple dietary advice reduces 24-hour urinary sodium excretion, blood pressure and drug consumption in hypertensive patients
Journal of the American Society of Hypertension Jul 07, 2018
Musso N, et al. - Considering the value of restricting sodium intake to 100 mEq (ie about 2.3 grams per day) researchers assessed 291 patients on antihypertensive treatment, 240 of whom were instructed to avoid salty foods, such as cheese and cured meats, and to switch from regular bread to salt-free bread, to see how the changes impacted them. The intervention group had a significant reduction in body weight, sodium excretion, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, and drug consumption. Even a minimal reduction in the apparent sodium intake, like around 0.5 grams a day, seemed to improve these parameters.
