Similar survival on home hemodialysis and automated peritoneal dialysis: An inception cohort study
Nephrology Dialysis Transplantation Aug 12, 2021
Bitar W, Helve J, Honkanen E, et al. - Similar survival was observed for patients receiving home hemodialysis (HD) vs those on automated peritoneal dialysis (APD), and both groups exhibited comparable characteristics.
Intention-to-treat analysis of adult patients who received kidney replacement therapy (KRT) and were on one of the home dialysis modalities at 90 days from initiating KRT.
Likelihood of surviving 5 years was 90%, 88% and 56% for home HD, APD, and continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) patients, respectively.
Post-adjustment for propensity score, the hazard ratio of death was 1.1 for APD and 1.6 for CAPD vs home HD.
Higher median age, more comorbidities, and less frequent receipt of kidney transplantation were noted in CAPD patients.
