Significant racial differences in the incidence and behavior of the follicular variant of papillary thyroid carcinoma
Head & Neck Apr 21, 2019
Mehta V, et al. - In 2004-2014, researchers examined 258,973 individuals from the National Cancer Database diagnosed with papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) to study the significant racial disparities in the incidence and management of the follicular variant (fvPTC). They observed that Blacks had the highest fvPTC rate, 40% when compared with white (30%), Hispanic (26%), Asian (25%). Lower odds of extrathyroidal extension (ETE) than whites and higher odds of fvPTC were demonstrated by Blacks. When compared to whites, Hispanics and Asians had lower odds of fvPTC and higher odds of lymph node metastasis and ETE.
