Significant liver fibrosis, as assessed by fibroscan, is independently associated with chronic vascular complications of type 2 diabetes: A multicenter study

Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice Jun 04, 2021

Mikolasevic I, Rahelic D, Turk-Wensween T, et al. - In this study with 442 outpatients with established diabetes mellitus type 2 (T2DM), it was inquired if controlled attenuation parameter (CAP) and liver stiffness measurement (LSM), as evaluated via vibration-controlled transient elastography, were related to chronic vascular complications of T2DM. For liver steatosis (i.e., CAP≥238 dB/m) and significant liver fibrosis (i.e., LSM≥7.0/6.2 kPa), the estimated prevalence was 84.2% and 46.6%, respectively. Findings demonstrated a strong link of significant liver fibrosis with the presence of macro-/microvascular complications of T2DM. These observations provide a new perspective on the follow-up of T2DM cases.
