Significance of the tentorial alignment in protecting the occipital lobe through the Poppen approach for tentorial or pineal area meningiomas

World Neurosurgery Sep 04, 2017

Li D, et al. – The current study was interested in exploring the factors that can predict the risk of occipital lobe damage preoperatively when resecting tumors located at the tentorial or pineal regions through the occipital–transtentorial approach (Poppen approach). During the Poppen approach, the risk of occipital lobe damage increases in the presence of a steep tentorial angle for tentorial or pineal area tumors. The findings suggested that awareness of such anatomical features preoperatively is essential for minimizing operative complications.
