Significance of 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) uptake in response to chemoradiotherapy for pancreatic cancer
Annals of Surgical Oncology Dec 10, 2018
Kurahara H, et al. - Considering the reports establishing the involvement of a metabolic shift to glycolysis in radioresistance, researchers examined the predictive capability of pretreatment 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET), which can detect enhanced glucose uptake, for the therapeutic response to chemoradiotherapy (CRT) in patients with pancreatic cancer (PC). For this purpose, they analyzed 125 PC patients (75 unresectable and 50 borderline resectable). Among these, 37 and 26 underwent induction chemotherapy before CRT and surgical resection after CRT, respectively. At three different institutions, FDG-PET was performed. Findings revealed a significant association of FDG-PET maximum standardized uptake values (SUVmax) with the therapeutic response to CRT in PC patients. Furthermore, patients with a high SUVmax tumor may have improved prognosis on receiving induction chemotherapy.
