Sickle cell trait and risk of ischemic stroke in young adults
Stroke Aug 28, 2020
Zhang RV, Ryan KA, Lopez H, et al. - Using a population-based case-control study of early-onset ischemic stroke conducted (IS) in the Baltimore-Washington region from 1992 to 2007, researchers analyzed sickle cell traits to see if and how they impacted the risk of ischemic stroke in young adults. From this study, they included 342 Black IS cases, ages 15 to 49, and 333 controls without IS. Via genotyping and imputation, each participant’s SCT status was established. There was no evidence of elevated risk of early-onset stroke with SCT. In prevalence of hypertension, previous myocardial infarction, diabetes mellitus, and current smoking status, there was no difference between those and without SCT.
