Shoulder arthroplasty in solid organ transplant patients: A retrospective, match paired analysis
Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery Aug 07, 2020
Rizk P, Rizzi SA, Patel MK, et al. - Solid organ transplant (SOT) patients undergoing shoulder arthroplasty were compared with a matched control group regarding the complications and functional outcomes. Retrospective review of the institution's database yielded data of 15 patients with previous SOT who underwent 19 shoulder arthroplasties and 34 patients undergoing 35 shoulder arthroplasties for the control group. Outcomes support the safety and effectiveness of performing shoulder arthroplasty in patients with previous SOT for degenerative shoulder disorders. They emphasize counseling patients preoperatively that their range of motion and function may not improve as much as noted in their nontransplant cohorts. There was higher incidence of postoperative blood transfusions and medically related complications among SOT patients.
