Short-term outcomes of laparoscopic vs open hepatectomy in the elderly patient: Systematic review and meta-analysis
HPB Feb 06, 2021
Hildebrand N, Verkoulen K, Dewulf M, et al. - Researchers aimed at comparing short term outcomes of laparoscopic hepatectomy (LH) to open hepatectomy (OH) for patients > 65 years via performing a systematic review and meta-analysis according to Cochrane guidelines. They included 13 studies with 1,174 patients (LH:532, OH:642) in the analysis. Per findings, LH appears superior to OH within the elderly population with respect to short-term outcomes. Elderly undergoing LH experienced significantly less postoperative complications, less blood loss, and shorter length of stay.
