Short-term outcomes of inflammatory bowel disease after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass vs sleeve gastrectomy
Journal of the American College of Surgeons Apr 06, 2019
Heshmati K, et al. - Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) and sleeve gastrectomy (SG) outcomes in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are compared. In this retrospective cohort study of 54 patients with either Crohn's disease (CD; n = 31) or ulcerative colitis (UC; n = 23), 19 patients underwent RYGB and 35 patients underwent SG. Outcomes revealed improvements in IBD post-bariatric surgery in a sizable proportion of patients. However, a significantly greater number of patients with increased IBD-medication requirements were observed in CD patients in correlation with RYGB. Researchers noted a less weight loss but a lower rate of severe complications with sleeve gastrectomy compared to RYGB. SG seems the safer surgery for patients with IBD, and particularly CD.
