Short-term outcomes of inflammatory bowel disease after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass vs sleeve gastrectomy
Journal of American College of Surgeons Feb 26, 2019
Heshmati K, et al. - Considering that Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) and sleeve gastrectomy (SG) may have beneficial effects on the immune system in addition to their efficacy for obesity, researchers compared RYGB vs SG outcomes in the patients with IBD (inflammatory bowel disease). In this study, 54 patients with either Crohn’s disease (CD; n=31) or ulcerative colitis (UC; n=23) diagnosed before bariatric surgery between 2000-2017 were retrospectively studied. Outcomes, revealed a sizable proportion of patients who experienced improvements in IBD post-bariatric surgery. However, in CD patients, a significantly greater number of patients with increased IBD-medication requirements was observed in correlation with RYGB. Compared to RYGB, SG resulted in less weight loss but with a lower rate of severe complications. This support SG as safer in patients with IBD, particularly CD.
