Short-term impact of assisted deliveries: Evaluation based on behavioral pain scoring and heart rate variability
The Clinical Journal of Pain Apr 15, 2018
Rakza T, et al. - In view of the current practice of using assisted deliveries (ADs) by obstetrical teams during labor when the fetus is likely to face difficulties, researchers investigated if pain related to instrumental delivery could impair autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity. They noted ADs (vacuum, forceps, or both) to be associated with persistent pain after birth, unlike normal vaginal deliveries. Moreover, reduced newborn infant parasympathetic evaluation (NIPE) index was observed in association with ADs. Results thereby suggest impairment of ANS activity in association with pain related to instrumental delivery.
