Short-term change in measures of glycemia in obese youth meeting criteria for prediabetes: A retrospective chart review
Hormone Research in Paediatrics Apr 24, 2020
El Mikati HK, McKinney BM, Yazel-Smith L, et al. - Researchers conducted this retrospective chart review to evaluate the short-term outcomes of patients referred with prediabetes and to determine predictors of worsening dysglycemia in youth. The sample consisted of patients referred to the Youth Diabetes Prevention Clinic (YDPC) with laboratory tests indicating an increased risk for type 2 diabetes (T2D). Of the 562 patients seen, 336 had both screening and YDPC HbA1c values. At the YDPC visit, race and screening glycemic category were significantly linked to dysglycemia, whereas gender, BMI z-score change, and days from referral were not. Findings suggested that patients with screening HbA1c < 6% may benefit from a 4-month follow-up at primary care while recommending changes in lifestyle. Minority race patients and screening HbA1c ≥ 6% are more likely to have a persistent HbA1c elevation.
