Short- and long-term reliability of the 6-minute walk test in people with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis
Respiratory Care Jul 28, 2018
Holland AE, et al. - In this reliability study of 70 adults with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), researchers determined the short- and long-term test-retest reliability of the 6-min walk distance (6MWD), peak heart rate, and nadir oxygen desaturation. This study was conducted within out-patient pulmonary rehabilitation programs at 2 tertiary hospitals. Following the completion of 2 baseline 6-min walk tests using a standard protocol, participants were examined for continuous measures of percutaneous SpO2 and heart rate via pulse oximetry. Based on the findings, they concluded that the 6MWD is a reproducible measure of exercise capacity in people with IPF. They observed that most likely one test can enable accurate determination of the nadir SpO2 but 2 tests on each occasion may be needed to assess the change in 6MWD with interventions.
