Short- and long-term outcomes of intraoperative spillage during laparoscopic removal of benign ovarian cysts
Surgical Endoscopy Oct 13, 2019
Hizkiyahu R, et al. - Patients with and without intraoperative spillage from benign adnexal masses during laparoscopic removal were compared regarding the short- and long-term outcomes. Researchers retrospective analyzed 186 cases of laparoscopic removal of ovarian cysts (cystectomy or adnexectomy) at their institution between the years 2013 and 2017. The study group comprised 104 cases in which intraoperative ovarian cyst spillage (IOCS) occurred, while the control group comprised the remaining 82 cases with no reported spillage. Observations revealed the association of IOCS during laparoscopic cystectomy with larger cyst diameter and intraperitoneal adhesions. However, the spillage was neither associated with adverse short- or long-term outcomes nor with recurrence rates.
