Short- and long-term mortality after liver transplantation in patients with and without hepatocellular carcinoma in the UK
British Journal of Surgery Mar 11, 2020
Wallace D, Cowling TE, Walker K, et al. - In the present study, the researchers sought to assess the short- and long-term mortality of recipients with and without hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in the UK between 1997 and 2016. Recipients of first-time elective adult liver transplant were identified in the UK, and four successive transplant eras were compared. Some 1,879 recipients with and 7,661 without HCC have been involved. The mortality rate after liver transplantation has more than halved in the past 20 years, in spite of increasing use of DCD donors. Improvements in overall survival can be demonstrated by reductions in mortality in both the short and the long term.
