Short- and long-term complications of surgical and percutaneous dilatation tracheotomies: A large single-center retrospective cohort study
European Archives of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology Apr 09, 2019
de Kleijn BJ, et al. - In this single-center retrospective study, researchers estimated the incidence of long- vs short-term complications of percutaneous dilatation tracheotomies (PDT) and surgical tracheotomies (ST) among 305 individuals who underwent a tracheotomy (either PDT or ST) in the University Medical Center Groningen from 2003 to 2013. They reported a similar incidence of short- and long-term complications including tracheal stenosis in both groups. They did not find any difference in long-term complications in the analysis of a small high-risk subgroup. They suggested PDT a safe alternative for ST in selected cases.
